What is Moore's Law?

"The number of transistors incorporated in a chop will approximately double every 24 month." -- Gordon Moore, Intel Co-Founder

This forecast of the pace of silicon technology, popularly known as "Moore's Law," was more thanjust a prediction -- it was the basis for understanding how and why integrated circuits wouldtransform the industry. Moore considered user benefits, technology trends and the economics of manufacturing in his assessment. He essentially described the basic business model for the semiconductor industry. Today, Intel continues to leadthe industry, driving Moore's Law to increase functionality, performance and decrease costs, bringinggrowth to industries worldwide.

In 1985, Intel co-founder Gordon Moore predicted that the number of transistors on a pieceof silicon would double every couple of years - an insight later dubbed "Moore' Law." Hisprediction has held true, as ever-shrinking transistor sizes have allowed exponentially growthin the number of transistors on a single chip.

Moore's Law is now a beacon for the electronics industry, and Intel applies its principles like no othercompany. Whole new ways for people to play, learn, work, and communicate have come about asthe company has continued to expand Moore's Law.

19714004 processor2,300 transistors
19728008 processor3,500 transistors
19748080 processor6,000 transistors
19788086 processor29,000 transistors
